Discord Nitro Now Comes With Xbox Game Pass Starter, But Console Multiplayer Is Missing
Discord Nitro is getting a pretty interesting gaming perk: a new Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition bundled into the US$9.99 Nitro plan, with no price increase announced for that tier.
The collab was confirmed by both Discord and Xbox after leaking a few weeks earlier. On paper, it sounds like a solid value-add for anyone already paying for Nitro, especially if your squad basically lives on Discord anyway. This Starter Edition includes access to more than 50 games and 10 hours of cloud gaming.
But there is one very important catch, bro: this version does not include online multiplayer access for Xbox console players.
That detail matters a lot more than it first looks. Free-to-play games can still be played online without a Game Pass subscription, so titles like free shooters and live-service games should not be affected in the same way. But if you bought a paid multiplayer game on Xbox and were thinking of dropping your normal Game Pass plan because Nitro now gives you this Starter Edition, you may kena surprise. Console online multiplayer is not part of this bundle.
PC players are in a better spot here. According to the report, players using Xbox through the PC app do not lose online multiplayer access with this Starter Edition. So for Malaysia and SEA, where a lot of gamers are already more PC-first than Xbox-console-first, the bundle may still be useful — especially for trying Game Pass titles without paying for a separate full subscription.
The 10 hours of cloud gaming is also interesting, but SEA players should keep expectations realistic. Cloud gaming quality depends heavily on official availability, server routing, latency, and your home connection. In Malaysia, even when a service technically works, the experience can swing from surprisingly okay to totally unplayable depending on where you are and what network you are on. So treat the cloud hours as a nice bonus, not the main reason to subscribe.
The bigger industry angle is that Xbox may be testing more flexible, cheaper Game Pass options. It is not clear yet whether Starter Edition will stay exclusive to this Discord Nitro partnership or eventually become one of Xbox’s lower-priced Game Pass tiers. Either way, this is a notable first: Game Pass now has an official tier with a cloud gaming time limit, and another first where console online multiplayer is not included.
There are Discord-side perks going the other way too. Eligible Game Pass subscribers are expected to receive 250 Discord Orbs monthly, a 1.2x Orbs boost from Discord Quests, and discounts in the Discord Shop. Xbox says more details are coming soon, including who exactly qualifies and when the benefits will roll out.
For Malaysian gamers, the easy takeaway is this: if you already pay for Nitro, this is a nice freebie. More than 50 games bundled into something you already use is not bad at all. But if you are an Xbox console player relying on Game Pass mainly for paid online multiplayer, do not cancel your current plan blindly. This Starter Edition is more of a sampler tier than a full replacement.
