Phantom Blade Zero

Overview

Phantom Blade Zero is a wuxia action role-playing game developed and published by Chinese studio S-GAME. An entry in the Phantom Blade series, it was built using Unreal Engine 5 and tells a standalone story requiring no knowledge of earlier games.

Its kungfupunk style combines traditional kungfu with steampunk and cyberpunk. Combat draws on Chinese martial arts, with motion capture by martial artists and collaboration with traditional martial arts schools. The soundtrack blends traditional Chinese instruments with modern musical styles.

Gameplay

Players control the assassin Soul from a third-person perspective. He carries two primary blade weapons and two secondary weapons called phantom edges, which include cannons, lances, axes and hammers. Switching weapons has a cooldown and fully restores sha-chi, the resource used for blocking and heavy attacks.

Defensive options include blocking, parrying and dodging. Colour cues identify enemy attacks with particular defensive restrictions: brutal moves heavily drain sha-chi when blocked, while killer moves cannot be blocked or parried. Parrying a brutal move or dodging a killer move immediately before impact triggers a ghostep, repositioning Soul behind the enemy.

Progression includes a skill tree, weapon upgrades using materials, and six accessory slots. Reforging weapons resets their upgrades and returns invested materials.

The semi-open world features seamlessly connected regions and multiple routes. Certain weapons unlock access to previously unreachable areas. Main quests follow Soul, while side quests explore other characters.

Four difficulty options are available: Wayfarer, Pathbreaker, Hellwalker and 66 Days. Hellwalker features more advanced, adaptive enemy AI. The 66 Days option adds a death counter to that difficulty, with permadeath when it reaches zero. New Game Plus unlocks after completing a playthrough.

Setting

The Phantom World draws on China around the Ming dynasty, mixing wuxia with steampunk, cyberpunk, dark fantasy and horror. Its martial underworld exists beyond the imperial court and official government.

Soul is an elite assassin serving the Order. Framed for its patriarch’s murder and hunted by its members, he suffers a fatal heart wound. Revived with a tainted heart and limited time to live, he seeks to restore his heart and uncover the conspiracy against him.

Release

Phantom Blade Zero was released on 29 October 2026 for Windows and PlayStation 5.
