Star Fox Switch 2 Remake Gets June 25 Launch, US Preorders Now Open

Nintendo’s space dogfight classic is officially coming back. Star Fox is scheduled to launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25, with preorders now live through US retailers.

For Malaysian and SEA Nintendo fans, the big thing to watch is pricing. Under Nintendo’s new pricing setup, the physical version is listed US$10 higher than the digital copy. But right now, both Amazon and Walmart are discounting the physical edition by US$10, bringing it in line with the digital price. Walmart is showing it at US$49.94 with the discount applied in cart.

Converted roughly, that is around the RM230–RM240 range before any shipping, import fees, or local retailer markup. So if you are the type who still wants cartridges for collecting, resale, or just because Switch boxes look good on the shelf, this is one of those rare preorder discounts worth noticing.

What is this new Star Fox?

This is not a brand-new Star Fox storyline. It is a full remake of Star Fox 64, the Nintendo 64 rail-shooter that originally launched in 1997. The game later received another remake on Nintendo 3DS in 2011 as Star Fox 64 3D, so Switch 2 players are getting the second major refresh of this classic.

The core squad is back: Fox McCloud, Falco, Peppy, and Slippy. The campaign still sends players through familiar routes and planets, including places like Corneria, Fichina, and Solar, with branching paths depending on how you perform. If you grew up hearing “Do a barrel roll!” in gaming memes, yes bro, this is that Star Fox DNA.

The biggest upgrade is visual. Nintendo has rebuilt the graphics from scratch, replacing the chunky N64 look with sharper, more modern environments and models. The layout of the stages remains familiar, but the presentation is much cleaner. There are also new cutscenes and fresh voice acting, so it should feel less like a simple port and more like a proper Switch 2-era remake.

Short campaign, but built for replays

Star Fox 64 was never a massive 40-hour RPG, and this remake seems to keep that arcade-style structure. IGN notes that HowLongToBeat puts the original campaign at roughly two and a half hours.

That sounds short on paper, but Star Fox has always been about replaying routes, chasing better runs, and pushing through tougher objectives. This version includes extra challenges, such as destroying specific targets, plus difficulty options for players who want more bite.

There is also a battle mode with 4v4 dogfights across three arena-style stages. That could be the sleeper feature for local multiplayer fans, especially in SEA where Nintendo sessions often happen around friends, siblings, and living-room chaos rather than just online ranked grind.

Should Malaysian players care?

If you are new to Star Fox, the old-school design might feel very different from today’s open-world and live-service games. It is more focused, more arcade, and probably more replay-driven than content-bloated.

But for longtime Nintendo fans, this is a pretty meaningful comeback. Star Fox has been quiet for too long, and Switch 2 getting a polished remake at launch-window timing gives Nintendo another nostalgia-heavy title that is easy to understand: fly, shoot, dodge, repeat until you look cool doing it.

No preorder bonuses have been announced at the time of writing, so Malaysian buyers may want to wait and see whether local game shops offer their own bundles or import options closer to launch. Still, if US pricing is any sign, the physical-versus-digital gap will be the thing to watch.
